Health Misinformation
During the pandemic , CPSO began to address the proliferation of health misinformation online . It was particularly concerned with a small , but vocal , group of physicians intent on publicly contradicting public health orders and recommendations .
Physicians hold a unique position of trust with the public and have a professional responsibility to not communicate anti-vaccine , anti-masking , anti-distancing and anti-lockdown statements , and / or promoting unsupported , unproven treatments for COVID-19 .
Despite warnings to desist , some physicians continued to put the public at risk with their messaging and , in some cases , their actions . Consequently , they were investigated by CPSO and , when warranted , were referred to discipline .
The College ’ s intent is not to stifle healthy public debate . We recognize the important roles physicians can play by advocating for change in a socially accountable manner . Rather , our focus is on addressing those arguments that reject scientific evidence and seek to rouse emotions over reason .
