KILCUMMIN SOIL WORKSHOPS BUILD KNOWLEDGE AND RESILIENCE
A six-month soils extension and training program helped Central Queensland graziers improve their understanding of soil health and soilbuilding practices . Landholders representing five properties from Kilcummin , Clermont and Mt Coolon , took part in the program , delivered by our project partner Central Highlands Regional Resources Use Planning Cooperative ( CHRRUP ).
Agroecologist and soil management specialist , David Hardwick supported the group to learn about soil ' s physical , chemical and biological properties , and how they affect pasture growth .
They learned how to enhance their soils and determine available nutrients – and how this benefits herd nutrition and performance .
Grazier Shontae Moran , of Double D Station , said : “ Soil health is everything ... having the capacity to monitor what ’ s going on in our soil and plants will help us understand how changing our grazing strategy benefits our landscape , the quality of our water , and our business as a whole .”
These events were funded by the Australian Government ' s National Landcare Program .
