School Program Introduction Seen internationally as a unique, holistic model for adult education programs and for student support services, Carlos Rosario has received considerable acclaim. Recognizing it as a national model, for example, the United States Department of Education, Office of Adult and Vocational Education, named the school as a finalist of the Secretary’s Award for Outstanding Adult Basic Education Programs. In 2006, Carlos Rosario also received an award from the DC mayor as one of the 10 best charter schools in the city. The 2007-2008 school year was a groundbreaking year for the Carlos Rosario School. Successes included organizational goals that were met and surpassed and the achievements of individual faculty, staff and students. Below are a few highlights of the 2007-2008 school year: • The Carlos Rosario Culinary Arts Program was chosen as an exemplary program by the DC Department of Health. • In March, Carlos Rosario’s Student Resource Room had its grand opening. • A record number of students, 1,381, were served on a daily basis. • A Carlos Rosario student won first prize for an essay that was entered in the 12th Annual district-wide Women’s History Month Essay Contest. Two Carlos Rosario students were finalists in the competition. • The first Carlos Rosario literary magazine with writings by students at all levels of English proficiency, In Their Own Words, was published. • On World Teachers Day Dr. Ryan Monroe, Assistant Principal, was recognized by TESOL for providing quality ESL teacher preparation. Individual achievements among faculty, staff and students combined with the achievements of the organization as a whole resulted in a historic 2007-2008 school year. 9
