Appendix D. Highlights of Supportive Services Workshops HIV/AIDS Information Tables: This year the department worked with La Clinica del Pueblo in educating the student body about HIV/AIDS. La Clinica del Pueblo HIV/AIDS counselors provided critical, life-saving information to the student body and distributed over 1500 HIV/AIDS prevention packets over the three-day period. Shuttle bus service was also provided to and from La Clinica del Pueblo for students interested in being tested. Rights & Options for Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Victims: This year the department worked with four community agencies: DC Rape Crisis Center, AYUDA, Metropolitan Police Department Domestic Violence Unit and the Latino Liaison Unit in educating the student body about Domestic Violence, the rights of the victim, reporting, “breaking the cycle” and local national resources, through a panel discussion. A total of 88 students attended the workshop. Personal Safety: This year the department worked with Latino Liaison Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department to educate the student body regarding safety tips and police/community relations. Workshops were held in assembly format. A total of 985 students attended the workshop. Education Opportunities for Adult Learners: This workshop was conducted by a College Board representative. The workshop was attended by students interested in pursuing a college degree/ vocational certification. The workshop informed students on next steps, academic requirements, and financial planning. A total of 122 students attended the workshop. Education and Career Planning: This workshop was conducted by a College Board Representative building upon the “Education Opportunities for Adult Learners.” A presentation was given on the application process, the difference between: grants, loans, Community Colleges, four-year colleges, and public and private colleges/universities. A total of 40 students attended the workshop. Building and Maintaining Credit: This year the department worked with representatives of The Latino Economic Development Corporation in educating students about the importance of building and maintaining credit. A total of 63 students attended the workshop. Foreclosure Prevention: The workshop was conducted by a group of expert panelists from the Latino Economic Development. As a result of the high rate of foreclosures specifically among minorities across the country the department felt it was critical to partner with LEDC to educate students in regards to foreclosure prevention. A total of 20 students attended the workshop. Depression Workshop: This year the department worked with Clinica del Pueblo in educating students in regards to: symptoms, care and prevention of depression. The workshop was conducted in each individual classroom to a total of 1,357 students. Patient Rights to Language Access: This year the department worked with the I-Speak Project from Georgetown University to educate students about their rights in accordance with the Language Access Act.
