She was also recognized during CentroNia’s 20th anniversary celebration, “with deep gratitude” for her “support of the children and families of CentroNia.” Allison R. Kokkoros, Deputy Director, presented a workshop at National Council of La Raza Conference held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in July 2005 entitled, “Raising Extraordinary Gifts, How to Run a Capital Campaign.” In September she presented “Equipped for the Future (EFF) in the ESOL Classroom; Examples and Application” as part of the D.C. Equipped for the Future Orientation event for adult literacy programs. Ms. Kokkoros presented another fundraising workshop for a conference held by DC LEARNs in November; and another EFF presentation in December, “EFF in the ESL Classroom: A Demystification of the EFF Framework,” at the National Conference on Adult Education: New Destinations for Literacy, Learning and Life. Ana-Maria Nuevo, Academic Director, presented a paper at the American Association of Applied Linguists (AAAL) conference in June 2006 in Montreal, Canada. Her paper was entitled, “Task Complexity and Interaction: L2 Learning Opportunities and Development”, which focused on the developmental benefits and outcomes of learner-learner task-based interaction. The data for this paper was based on her doctoral dissertation that she completed in July 2006 at Georgetown University, in the Department of Linguistics. George Chinnery, Teacher, presented on “A Survey of Internet Technologies for the Listening and Speaking Class” and “Task-Based Integrated Skills Development Using Instant Messenger” at the National TESOL Conference in Tampa, Florida in March 2006. He also published “Going to the MALL: Mobile-assisted language learning, Language Learning & Technology” and “Speaking and listening online: A survey of Internet resources” in English Teaching Forum. Carlos Rosario students Yeny Ferman, Hirute Desta, Manual Cristaldo-Vargas, Ladys Puerta, and Nancy Lemus, won “runner up” awards in the Adult Literacy Resource Center’s Women’s History Month Essay Contest. Manuel also presented his essay, “An Immigrant Making a Difference” at the essay awards presentation in March. Making a Difference by Manual Cristaldo-Vargas (Excerpt) I am helping the Latin American community in many different activities. I distribute flyers with mortgage information. I visit Latin American houses to talk about the rights to education. I am talking about the right to vote in DC, too. Also, I am a voluntary referee for Latin American soccer on the weekends. I often talk with my friends about helping others…My philosophy is to help other people in the neighborhood especially the immigrant community.
