The Far Eastside of Indianapolis is an area plagued by high rates of poverty and crime. The rate of violent crimes in the Far Eastside is nearly triple the rate for Marion County. The Phalen Leadership Academies community experienced the impact of violent crime firsthand when a scholar at James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy High School (JRP) was shot and killed on his way to play basketball with friends.

In response to the rising tide of violence in Indianapolis, and the desperate need for safe spaces to support our scholars, families, and community, PLA began building the Sean Cowdrey Health and Wellness Complex. The Cowdrey Complex seeks to foster a safe and nurturing environment for children and families through a multi-generational approach, with a focus on leadership, health and wellness, teamwork, character development, creative exploration, and self-awareness.

The 17,585 sq foot ‘Falcons’ Nest’ gymnasium will have a 1,500 seating capacity and current plans include a climbing wall, lining along the perimeter of the floor with four running lanes, climbing ropes, pull up bars, volleyball courts, a retractable wall that divides the gym in half for multiple activities, training rooms, and locker rooms.

An outdoor football stadium and soccer fields are also included in the plans. Key programming areas will include health and wellness programs; organized team sports for children and young adults; and PLA University. The Complex will be located on the Far Eastside of Indianapolis, adjacent to the James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy (JRP).
