Juvederm - Return of the
Enviable Gaze
Collagen is a substance produced by the body under the skin that cushions it. When it is
stretched, for example during a smile and then relaxes again, the skin is supported to keep
the skin at a low elastic state. However, when we get older, the production of collagen
ceases and the skin sags which causes the wrinkles as the skin has no support.
This is where Juvederm comes in. A treatment that not only replaces some collagen, but
stimulates the body to create more with the use of hyaluronic acid for as long as 2 years.
This keeps your skin looking young for years after the treatment. Hyaluronic acid is
naturally produced by our bodies, but as we age this dissipates, so the production of
collagen ceases. The term used for this style of product is ‘filler’ because it fills the void
below the skin by replacing the collagen. The fluid is injected just under the skin in the
affected areas and massaged to ensure it evens out under the skin. This is repeated until
the area of wrinkles and sagginess is covered.
All medicine has possible side effects and Juvederm is no different. The possibilities are
those associated with injections, although these are only small ones just under the skin.
There may be some redness and/or tender feeling where the injections were administered;
however, if these are experienced, they will pass within 2 to 4 weeks. The point about the
injections being just below the skin is crucial. The injections must not enter the blood
stream through an artery as this is where complications may occur. There is a possibility of
your vision being affected or even scarring occurring in these incidences. At the extreme
end of the spectrum there is the possibility of a stroke, only if the substance is
administered into an artery. Overall, the treatment is safe as it is merely injected below the
surface of the skin and uses chemicals that your body has naturally produced for years.
