T
he animation is absolutely stellar, done in
Production I.G’s typical high-quality. Despite
that, there are a few points where the CG didn’t
mesh well with the rest of the scene. This is
most notable when they come to the Sea Galaxy, which
emits electrical discharges, akin to lightening, upwards.
Perhaps the most notable disparity in the CG is when
Chamber is flying around. Since he does that a lot,
it’s easy to pick up. Still, this doesn’t detract from the
impressive visuals. For example, night skies are notoriously
hard to do right, yet Production I.G manages to get it done
right. Although, it does seem to have trouble bringing
out the features of the characters when panning
out. Overall, the animation is fluid and doesn’t
disappoint.
On the other side to this same coin, the
music had a little to be desired. There weren’t
any tracks that one could call “amazing,”
like everyone seems to say about the OP to Date A
Live (which I happen to agree with). Still, it does
provide a subtlety that completes
the series, though I would have
liked to see a few more upbeat
tracks. The music does its job, however,
so there’s really nothing to complain
about. My personal preference are just
that; mine.
As good as this series is, we can’t escape
the inevitable fan service that seems to come with
every series these days. Most notable is a dancing
scene involving three of the female characters during a
festival. It’s reminiscent of a Middle Eastern, or other
Arabic persuasion, styled dance. Then, there is also the
requisite swimsuit episode that takes place relatively
early on. It doesn’t so much detract from the series as it
does emphasize how different the culture of the humans
living on Earth is.
In the end, I let you be the judge of the series. I don’t
make it a habit to give it rating of any kind, like five stars
or X/10. I find that quantifying how enjoyable it was does
nothing to help you, the potential viewer of this series, in
making a determination as to whether to watch it or not.
Still, I will recommend that you do watch it.
It’s definitely worth the time it takes to go through all 13
episodes and you won’t even realize you’ve gone through
them until it’s over.
