Animals of WWI | Page 6

It was not uncommon for the armies of both sides of the war to capture animals with prisoners. Often the armies would adopt the animal and put it to use. Such was the case with Bobby and Max. It is interesting to note that almost every account of a captured dog by the Allies mentions the high intelligence of the dogs captured from the Germans. It is often mentioned how quickly the dogs adapted to their new master and the speed with which they responded to commands.

Bobby was captured with German prisoners in 1915 and was adopted by the Royal Sussex Regiment. He is described as being large and strong, having a shaggy coat, and being very clever.

Bobby served as a messenger dog for a number of months in the trenches with the regiment. However, during a very heavy battle, he disappeared. The soldiers had become very fond of him and mourned his loss. None of the soldiers knew exactly what happened to Bobby.
