Yel

The Mixed-Breed

Another naval mascot was a dog named Yel, whose full name was Yelverstone. He was a rather large, heavy-coated dog from Dartmoor and was owned by Commander Davenport. Yel spent time on shore as well as on a ship. He went to South Africa, where he encountered some mishaps. Davenport had a colored servant, named Snowball, who became devoted to Yel. While on shore, Snowball protected Yel from natives who might have enjoyed him for dinner. He meticulously groomed Yel and removed ticks and fleas from him daily. Once when Yel stumbled on a black ant nest, it was Snowball's quick action that saved Yel from being infested and bitten by the ants. Snowball was able to get Yel to a nearby pond, where Snowball dunked him. Yel returned the loyalty by saving Snowball from two poisonous snakes that were hidden in the brush.
