Jimmy was born in the trenches, and, when he was only a few weeks old, his mother, who was actually captured from the Germans, was killed in action. Jimmy was adopted by the 1st Battalion, The Cameronians as their mascot.

The soldiers doted on him. They fed him canned milk and taught him to do tricks such as standing up on his hind legs to beg for biscuits and jam. He would also put his forelegs around a soldier's neck and give him a kiss, or he would stand at the entrance of a trench and lift a foreleg to "shake hands."
