Sometime later, as wounded men were brought from the front to the hospital, Verdun Belle went crazy with excitement. It was her master, shell shocked and unconscious. As the young marine regained consciousness, he felt Belle's soft tongue licking the dirt off of his face. As he recovered on a cot in the shade of a tree, Verdun Belle lay in her own cot next to him, nursing two puppies.
