Looking Out
for Josie
In 2017, Baird’s tapir Josie developed a painful infection in
her left cornea. An animal ophthalmologist brought in to
consult on the situation concluded she had permanently lost
vision in that eye, so we removed it to eliminate further pain
stemming from the condition.
We were not sure how well Josie would learn to navigate her
environment with just one eye given her advanced age, but
thanks to her patient, compassionate keepers’ commitment
to understanding her special needs, this elderly tapir quickly
returned to her normal self.
