South African fishing legend Piet Joubert, on his
boat Bonito. On 16 November 1994, he decided
to tackle deep sea solo, no crew to support him.
He, of course, managed to land a Marlin all on his
own, a truly incredible achievement.

An ever increasing culture of catch
and release by non-commercial
fishermen is great to see, and of
course has a positive impact on fish
populations.
Sodwana plays host to many large
fishing tournaments each year like
the OET, Myn Manne and of course
the Billfish 15000, world class
angling on display.

Great news for anglers is that it is thought that
the fish population in Sodwana Bay is ever on the
increase. This is largely due to the lower amounts
of trawlers illegally fishing the African coastline.
Ironically this has not been driven by better policing of the area, but rather the effect of sea
pirates off the Somali coast scaring trawlers
away. Higher volumes of Game fish and Billfish
Angling Times Weekly SA
are able to migrate south down the east coast of
Africa and healthier populations of fish reach the
coast of South Africa.
