04 WHAT’S ON THE MESSAGE. BRINGING INTO FOCUS FILIPINO PRESENCE IN AUSTRALIA www.kalatas.com.au | Volume 5 Number 12 | SEPTEMBER 2015 Feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia ADOLP marks 10th year THE Australian Devotees of Our Lady of Penafrancia (ADOLP) will hold the Feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia on September 19 with a colourful celebration as they mark their 10th year since they started the devotion to the ‘Ina’ in Australia. With this year’s theme ‘Living Out God’s Mercy and Compassion in the Year of the Poor’, the ADOLP is inviting all devotees to ‘Ina’ to join the fiesta to be held at the Tench Reserve, Nepean River in Penrith. Triduum services to mark the feast started last month with the next services to be held on September 5, 11am, at the Holy Trinity Parish Church, Granville and on September 12, 11am at the St. Andrews Church in Marayong. The main activities on September 19th include the Concelebrated Mass, 9:30 AM, St. Nicolas of Myra Church, High St. Penrith; the Fluvial Procession, 12nn, Nepean River, Factory Road (Tench Reserve); Lunch Fellowship and Entertainment follows at 1pm. It was in the summer of 2005 when the founders of the Penafrancia Devotion first met at the Queen Victoria building to organise the devotion in Australia. The founders, Jun Relunia, Neria Soliman and Josie Musa outlined the priorities to bring INA in the Filipino Chaplaincy thru the Diocese of Parramatta. In May 2006, the replica of INA arrived in Sydney and the first novena mass was held at St Michael’s Church, Blacktown. The ADOLP Inc. was incorporated in June 2006 with the objective of propagating the devotion to Ina under the guidance of the Basilica of Penafrancia and the Filipino Chaplaincy, Diocese of Parramatta. In the same year, ADOLP website www. australiandevoteespenafrancia.com was created. In 2006, on the birthday of the Blessed Mother, the replica of Ina found a home at St Nicholas of Myra Church, High Street, Penrith. The first fiesta of Our Lady of Penafrancia was celebrated on 16 Sept 2006, the third Saturday of September with the Mass held at the St Nicholas of Myra. After the novena mass, a procession following the andas of Our Lady of Penafrancia was held around the church. There was no fluvial procession, as it was in the opinion of the Filipino Chaplain, not appropriate yet at that time. Since then, a regular monthly novena mass is being held every 1st Saturday of the month at 11:00 am at St Nicholas of Myra, High Street, Penrith. A river cruise at the Nepean River in 2008 was also organized by ADOLP. The Penrith’s Nepean Belle former ownerswere very much impressed with the significance of the fluvial procession that they personally offered their new family boat to be the “pagoda” for the river procession for the last seven years.
