Mum,
sons win
in karate
competition
A 36-year old Fil-Aussie mother and her
two sons bagged awards at the Black Belt
Martial Arts Intramural (BBMA) held recently
at the Central Coast Grammar School.
By Violi Calvert
MUM Hazel Coloma Lim,
who had only been training
for nine months with BBMA
Hornsby Dojo, won 1st place
in Kata Female Basic Veteran (over 35) division and 2nd
place in Kata Female Basic.
Her two sons Caleb and
Elijah scored victories as
well. Caleb, 9, won 3rd place
Basic Kata. Caleb, who started karate lessons in February 2013, is currently on his
blue advance belt. He is also
training on karma, bo and sai.
Elijah, 6, won 1st place
little dragons warriors kata
5-6yrs. Elijah also started
training in February 2013 and
currently on little dragons orange belt.
Meanwhile, a nephew of
Hazel, seven-year old Ethan,
won 1st place little dragons
kata (6-7yrs) and 2nd place in
little dragons tag sparring.
Hazel and the boys were
the only Fil-Aussies who participated in the competition
which gathered a field of 345
competitors.
Hazel left her job of IT
product development manager five years ago to look after her two sons. She decid-
ed to take up karate after seeing its physical and mental
impact on the development of
her sons.
“Through karate, I have
gained a better balance, both
physically and mentally in
my everyday life. It has become an outlet of stress, a
break from the usual routine
and challenges of being a stay
home mum,” Hazel said.
“Karate makes me a better parent by modelling to my
children the attributes of respect, self-discipline, focus,
perseverance, humility, courage and an indomitable spirit.”
