Bringing into focus Filipino presence in Australia llThe Freedom Luncheon and Ball organised by the Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations Inc (APCO) will be held during lunchtime on June 8, on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, at the Conca D’Oro next to the Riverwood Train Station. The Freedom Ball has been held by the APCO since its formation in 2010. This is not only meant to commemorate the day that the Philippines was declared as an independent nation but also to celebrate APCO’s breaking free from a regressive and problematic community umbrella body, hence the event’s name. The Freedom Ball has been an avenue for the exuberant display of the creativity, talents, teamwork and management skills of APCO volunteer-members and affiliates. Every year is a new delightful experience for the guests, organisers and performers. The very prestigious Filipiniana Gown and Barong Competition are always highly anticipated because this is the time that the best national attire are worn and appreciated to the hilt. Access to this year’s venue is easy. If coming by car there are lots of free parking in surrounding areas and under the Riverwood Shopping Centre. Entry ticket is at $80 inclusive of $10 raffle tickets for the $1,000.00 first prize, sit-down 3 course lunch, hours of dancing accompanied by the Maynilad Band and the usual merriment that accompanies all APCO gatherings. The highlight is for APCO to pay tribute to government bodies, business groups, community organisations and individuals who have been very generous in donating aids to the victims of calamities in the Philippines. The proceeds of this Ball will again go to the various advocacy and community projects of APCO including the continuing rebuilding and rehabilitation of the victims of super typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).
