Mindanao scholar receives help from APCO, Adhika
JED Christian Zayas Sayre, a Mindanao scholar from the Water Agro-forestry and Nutrition Development (WAND) has received a boost in his studies with the support given him by the Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations Inc (APCO) and the Adhika Inc. Jed is undertaking a scholarship at the Coady International Institute which has tied up with the WAND programme. Coady has offered the diploma in development leadership in Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada. “Thank you so much for the generosity and the support from the APCO and ADHIKA Inc Sydney Filipino-Australians. I am now here in Canada doing progress,” said Jed. The programme is supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) with Canadian $15,000 including tuition, accommodation and meals and health insurance. Concert under the stars
OVERNIGHT camping and a concert under the stars will kick off a renewed push to breathe life into Bulwangang Bonifacio at Scho?elds in November. These events were only some of the activities planned during a gathering recently of community volunteers and trust members of the Philippines Australian Cultural Foundation (PACF) led by chairman Manny Villion. Mr Villion said the initial community support to the centre was coming from organisations such as Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations, Philippine Council of NSW and their af?liate members. He made special mention of Daisy Cumming, who has been the spark behind new fund-raising activities. Meantime, the grotto of Mother Mary will soon have a glass protector, Mr Villion announced. PACF treasurer Jimmy Lopez announced an ambitious target of six months to ?nally wipe out a bank debt of $400,000.
Penafrancia celebrations this month
SILVERWATER PARK. The eighth year celebration in honour of the feast of Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia of the Archdiocese of Sydney (NUSPAS) will be held on September 14 at the Silverwater Park (off Silverwater Road) in Clyde Street, Slverwater. The program begins with the Novena at 9am followed by the fluvial procession of the replica of the Ina along Parramatta River at 9.30am. The Australian Devotees of Our Lady of Penafrancia (ADOLP) will celebrate the 2013 Feast Day of Our Lady of Penafrancia on September 21 at the St. Nicholas of Myra Church, High Street, Penrith. Celebrations begin with the Novena at 9am followed by the concelebrated Mass at 9.30am. WAND’s Project supports the Initao Bayani Challenge, a community initiative aimed to build 100 Ecosan toilets, 50 biosand ?lters and plant 15,000 fruit and timber trees in the mountains of Tagpaco (Initao), Sungay (Alubijid ) and Tagbalogo (Naawan) Municipalities Misamis Oriental.

PAMA marks 21st year, completes medical mission
THE Philippine-Australian Medical Association (PAMA) held its 21st Anniversary Ball Club in a Filipiniana motif at the Dural Country last month. The PAMA has much to celebrate about especially after successfully completing their 6th Annual PAMA Medical Misson last June in Sasmuan and Lubao Pampanga with 10 volunteers from Australia and 40 volunteers from the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod. The mission treated 2,232 patients from impoverished areas. The mission also saw PAMA donating 50 hospital beds in various areas of Guihulgan, Negros Occidental, El Nido of Palawan, Cavite and ultrasound machine for Sasmua and Lubao, Pampanga. An anaethesia machine was also donated to Quezon Province 1992, PAMA is an association of Filipino-Australian doctors committed to providing charitable services and humanitarian aid in the Philippines, and facilitating the professional development of its members. PAMA is currently headed by president Dr. Taciano Bantatua Jr., PAMA has a strong continuing education program with evidencebased lectures by prominent speakers they also hold events and scienti?c meetings aiming on medical missions in the Philippines. Everyone can make an online donation to PAMA to support the 2013 Medical Mission to Luzon, Philippines. PAMA membership is open to all Filipino-Australian doctors in Australia, registered or non-registered.

A concert to raise funds for the Philippine Australian Community Foundation will be held on September 22 at the Diamond Showroom, Blacktown Workers Club. The concert dubbed ‘Jasmine in Concert’ features 21-yearold Jasmine Faye Biala. The concert has been organised by Reming Biala, CPA who is a long-time supporter of PACF.
