Filipino community broadcasters form new non-pro?t group
ADHIKA Inc., has been formalised as a new non-pro?t association with the induction of its of?cers at the Philippine Consulate in Sydney on July 22. Made up of members of the FilipinoAustralian radio producers and broadcasters, Adhika Inc started as a free-wheeling entity of Fil-Aussie media members who met regularly with their monthly ‘kapihan’. “We are excited about the opportunities we have under Adhika to harness the collective power and reach of the Filipino-Australian community media,” said Josie ‘Pines’ Musa, inducted as the group’s overall coordinator and public of?cer. “Not a lot of people know that Filipino-Australian media has existed for more than 30 years and that re?ects a fairly long period of serving the local community as many of these press members work voluntarily outside their work commitments,” she said. Consul General Anne Jalandoon-Louis of?ciated the induction of the of?cers that included of?cers and directors from different media groups. Musa, a community radio host, spearheaded the formation of Adhika, Inc. under the guidance of Jimmy Pimentel, long-time Fairfax journalist and convenor of FilPressSyd, a network of FilipinoAustralians involved in community media. Among the projects outlined by the new Adhika of?cers were to organise Media Study Tour to the Philippines and, separately, a group visit to tourist hotspots in the Philippines to raise the pro?le of the country as a top travel destination for Australians. Acknowledging the role of Adhika in the local community, Pimentel cited Adhika’s early achievements since it started barely two years ago. “What makes Adhika unique among Filipino organisations is that the people now behind it were already achieving results before they even thought of forming Adhika,” Pimentel said referring to the inaugural media forum hosted by the Adhika, Inc. last year as well as a fundraising for a school library in the Philippines. “For practical reasons, it became necessary for the people behind these ongoing projects to incorporate Adhika as a non-pro?t organisation to continue its work,” he said.
