The incumbent prime minister of the land, Malcolm Turnbull, was replaced by his treasurer Scott Morrison within minutes – only two years into his term - in a ‘party room’ meeting by a handful of his own political colleagues who put him there in the first place. A sobering experience to watch – through the press – the ‘knifing’ of a leader, taking us back to Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar facing his attackers, reeling as friends-turned-enemies took turns stabbing him: “Et tu, Brute?” (And you, too, Brutus?) he gasped at his closest friend Brutus. It could not have happened so swiftly in a republican system of government. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte may have to think again about moving to change the country’s republican system of government to a parliamentary system should he choose to continue his leadership style. Some armchair political analysts have suggested, after watching this latest political crisis in Australia, that President Duterte may not have survived as head of state so long had he been Prime Minister of a Philippine parliamentary system of government. He may be popular with voters, but it has been suggested that the president does not appear to have the same support in the Congress. But then again, who are we to say which system of government was better: Parliamentary or Republican? Or a system under communism or dictatorship? We are not, after all, experts or knowledgeable enough to determine what would suit a democracy-loving people such as Filipinos and Australians. Maybe it’s a good time, at least for Filipinos, to reflect and understand which system of government would suit the population better. Or best. - Jaime K Pimentel, Editor Editorial: [email protected] Advertising: [email protected] PO Box 18, Quakers Hill 2763 Phone: (02) 8834 7366 • Mobile: 0450 073 591 Connect with us: facebook.com/angkalatas | +angkalatas | @angkalatas | youtube.com/user/KalatasAK4to7 Printed by: Spotpress Pty Ltd 24 Lilian Fowler Place, Marrickville NSW 2204 Where to find us: BAGIT ORIENTAL, 6 Queen St., St. Marys BAHAY KUBO KARAOKE RESTAURANT, Shop 6&7 Oxford St., Ingleburn CHOWKING ORIENTAL FOODMART, Shop1/118 Church St, Parramatta FIESTA FILIPINO, 18 Main St., Blacktown FIL-OZ ASIAN MINIMART, Shop 7/215 MacFarlane St., Merrylands KAMAYAN FOOD PLUS, 55 Rooty Hill Rd.
