Farewell for tourism attache REPS from the Filipino press and community organisations hosted recently a farewell programme for tourism attache Consuelo Jones who is set to return to Manila’s head office this month. Ms Jones has been the Philippine tourism department’s attache in Sydney for more than 28 years inclusive of two extensive terms as head of tourism operations for Australia and New Zealand. As a dedicated tourism professional with an impressive track record, she has become the ‘public face’ for the Philippines in the tourism market and its many stakeholders in Sydney. Also known as ‘Lito’ and ‘Jonesy’ to close friends, the attache once chaired the Association of South East Asean Nations COMMUNITY ROUND-UP With MARILIE BOMEDIANO (ASEAN) and Asia Travel Marketing Association (ATMA) chapters in Australia.’ She was a recipient of the ‘Tourism Personality of the Year’ by SKÅL and was nominated ‘Communicator of the Year’ by the Australian Society of Travel Writers (ASTW). “Being in the industry has given me the opportunity to discover new places, meet people from different countries who in many cases have become lifelong friends,” Ms Jones said. “When I started, Australia was ranked between 10 and 12 in arrivals to the Philippines with minimal numbers. This year will end with at least 240,000 Australians visiting the Philippines.” “To see how the market has grown against many odds at times is an achievement all in itself. At present, Australia ranks fifth in arrivals, third in actual spending and longer stays averaging 12 nights. It is still growing and a lot of credit I share with the wholesalers and agents, the many hotel and resort representatives, the airlines and those who have returned to share the fun and adventure they experienced in the Philippines.” A memorable trip to The Gardens BUHAY Dalisay Filipino Australian Association embarked on a bus trip to Mount Annan in the Macarthur Region on the 21st of August to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
