A celebration and reminder
WE MARK the 120th anniversary of Philippine independence this year with joy that Filipinos remain free to manage their own country in these troubled times .
Those of us who lived through the Japanese occupation in 1941-1945 know only too well the life of fear and shame one had to endure life without freedom .
That ’ s why we recognise the sacrifice of those brave Filipinos who put their bodies and souls on the line , those who laid down their lives to set us free ; those who fought and survived to rebuild the Philippines from the ashes .
Those heroes were not only those whom we read about like Andres Bonifacio , Gregorio del Pilar , Emilio Aguinaldo and Jose Rizal , but also those who

walked among us in our time such as airforce fighter pilots Jesus Villamor and Cesar Basa , and thousands of freedom-fighting ‘ guerilleros ’ including a dear friend , Raul Manglapus .
In this issue , another survivor of the Japanese occupation and my ‘ hermano ’, Alfredo ‘ Ding ’ Roces , encapsulates the Filipinos ’ struggle for independence up to the day when they declared to the world that they were free to chart their own ship .
Roces recognises the years of turmoil in between , when freedom was stolen from Filipinos , and eventually returned to them in 1946 .
Our celebration of Philippine Independence Day must serve as a reminder of that struggle by our forebears , and a call to continue guarding that hard-won freedom so that our children and children ’ s children will enjoy what we have today . •
