Father Nico Lariosa, originally from Legaspi in the Bicol region of the Philippines, was ordained along with Alan Wong of China. After completing secondary school and undergraduate studies in the Philippines, Lariosa moved to Brisbane to earn his Masters in Philosophy at the University of Queensland. He had this call to the priesthood that refused to leave him. “I felt much more strongly the desire to become a Jesuit (priest),” Lariosa said. He entered the Jesuit order in 2007, on the same that his friend Alan Wong did. Both of them went on to theology studies at Boston College in Massachusetts USA. Fr Nico is now based at St Aloysius College in Kirribilli. It was soon after 1995 World Youth Day that Lariosa aged 12, entered a minor seminary in Tabaco City, Philippines. He became inspired to join the Jesuit order three years later, when he heard the story of a 26-year-old Jesuit from the Philippines, Brother Richie Ferndando, who died protecting a group of Cambodian students from a grenade Lariosa said Br Fernando’s retreat diary entry inspired him to give his life for Christ. “He wrote, ‘I wish, when I die, people remember not how great, powerful, or talented I was, but that I served and spoke for the truth, I gave witness to what is right, I was sincere in all my works and actions, in other words, I loved and followed Christ’. “Those words spoke to me as a 15 year old in the seminary." n Mission accomplished VAA, Inc. on a feeding program; support farmers in Visayas A DELEGATION of eight members of the Visayan Association of Australia (VAA, Inc.) went on a mission of charity to the Visayan region of the Philippines in May 2018.
