Fun for everyone
THE SSFABA leagues trace a history of almost 16 years back to the days when the teams played social games Bankstown . The league started with friendlies bringing families and the Filipino community together every weekend .
After over a decade , fathers and sons are now playing together in the league – either on the same team or opposing teams . Among father-son members at the league are MVP Joshua and his father , Jason , who played as guard for the Blue team .
“ This started out as social games to bring families together , now we can see even our sons playing with us ,” said Romy Tan , committee head .
Blue Team placed second after a tight battle against the white team .
The league which is open to Pinoys aged 16 to 60 has also become a venue for training , exercise and physical fitness .
“ Maganda po ito sa katawan ng tao , exercise yung paglalaro ( This is good for the body , playing can be a good exercise ). I ’ ve been playing in this league for many years now ,” said Yellow team forward Romeo Ramirez , 57 , of Prestons . He is one of the senior players in the league .
“ I love basketball , I play it with my heart . I come here every Saturday to associate with other Filipinos . The sport promotes good lifestyle and gives you exercise , I ’ ve been encouraging my kids to play this game ,” said Archie Patrimonio , league top scorer ( after seven rounds ) from the Blue team .

BILL Yelland of Warwick Farm and member of Fairgolf Social Golf club won the 21st PAL Kalayaan cup golf tournament held at Riverside Oaks Golf Resort on June 13 to celebrate the 118th anniversary of Philippine Independence .
He scored 40 points under the Stableford scoring system using his AGU handicap of 21 with Georges River Golf Club . He was given the championship trophy , return airfare to Manila courtesy of Philippine Airlines and the privilege to engrave his name in the perpetual trophy and a dozen golf balls .
“ I ’ m so happy to win this prestigious golf tournament and was impressed by how well it was organised . I am looking forward to defend my title next year ” said an ecstatic Bill Yelland .
Before the awards presentation , this writer as chairperson of the new Kalayaan Cup Organising Committee welcomed the participants and thanked major sponsors for their continued support namely PAL represented by Country Manager for Australia & NZ Ian Robinson , LBC represented by Delfin Posada , RO Biala Pty Ltd and Blacktown Mortgage represented by Carol Manoloto . Appreciation went to the golf clubs and groups for supporting the tournament – the Sydney Metro Social Golf club ( V Leones ), Puro Golf Club ( T Quintana ), Golf ParE Social Club ( A Cruz ), Pogi Golf ( N Santos ), Thai Golf Assoc ( Sutti Sutontanyakorn ), Italian Golf Club ( Angelo Lo Surdo ) and others such as Sydney Jokers , Fairgolf , ParX . Two golfers from Pinoy Golfers of Melbourne were acknowledged .
Consul Marford Angeles representing ConGen Anne Jalandoon Louis congratulated the Kalayaan cup organising committee and lauded PAL for supporting the event for so many years now .
Mr . Ian Robinson cited the committee for the successful holding of the tournament . He reiterated his desire for PAL to continue this tradition started some fifteen years

Division winners were : John Lo Surdo for A with 39 points using handicap of 13 from Italian Golf Association ; Govind Singh for B with 38 points , handicap of 19 from ParE Golf ; Mek Phungsaphan for C with 39 , handicap of 24 from Thai Golf Association ; and Vicky Hoare for Ladies with 35 points using her AGU handicap of 24 . They each received $ 300 cash prize , trophies and golf balls for their exceptional efforts .
Division runners up were : Sam Akbar for A with 36 points using his AGU handicap of 13 ; Nelson Catig for B with 37 pts , handicap of 20 from Puro Golf Club ; Caesar David for C with 37 pts , handicap of 27 from Sydney Jokers and Vangie Leones for Ladies with 28 using handicap of 24 from Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club . They were awarded $ 150 prize , trophies and golf balls .
Novelty prize winners of $ 30 each and a dozen golf balls on all holes were : Vangie Leones ( D & P on hole 1 ), Buddy Nagi ( D & P on 2 & 14 ), Adrian Engo ( D & P on 3 ), Mike Baylon ( D & P on 4 ), Richard Espiritu ( Longest drive on hole 5 ), Romy Tablizon ( NTP on 6 ), Carlos Quintana ( D & P on 7 ), Fidelis Badelles ( Longest drive on hole 8 ), Jason Lam ( D & P on 9 & 11 ), Sam Ramos ( Longest Drive on 10 ), Mannix Gonzales ( NTP on 15 ), Aris Ortanez ( D & P on 16 ), Ellen Sioco ( NTP on 17 and Bernie Balagtas ( D & P on 18 ). No one won the Drive & Pitch at holes 12 and 13 .
