Beware ambitions of a superpower
ONE cannot help but worry about Communist China ’ s ambitions , especially of using it ’ s wealth and influence to acquire power over vulnerable or unsuspecting people across the globe .
I worry about how anxious some of my closest relatives and contacts in the Philippines are becoming over what they consider the ‘ New Chinese ’ pouring into the cities and “ changing the landscape ”.
It doesn ’ t help that the present Philippine Government doesn ’ t seem to mind , for example , allowing a Chinese Communist warship to water-gun Filipino fishing boats in the Spratly ’ s islands where they have lived and fished for a living more than a century .

‘ surrendered ’ to China its rights over the islands it owned , without a serious challenge , despite winning the fight over ownership in an international court .
The excuse that China was ‘ too big ’ to take on has not been shared by most Filipinos , as I understand it .
One only has to see how Vietnamese gunboats took on Chinese warships attempting to overrun an island of their own ( the Vietnamese ) in 1988 - and won - to see how lame the Philippine Government stance has been .
It ’ s not how tall one ’ s tormentor stands that determines how one acts to defend one ’ s own when threatened . In the case of nations , the measure is sovereignty . One can not – must not – surrender its sovereignty without a robust challenge .
But why worry about what ’ s happening in the Philippines , one might ask .
Because there are already signs here in Australia that something not dissimilar to the Philippine condition may happen before we know it . •
