Paunan QUEZON CITY-- President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Thursday presided over a command conference at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) office to oversee the ongoing risk reduction measures and preparations for the expected onslaught of Typhoon Ompong this week. The meeting was attended by Cabinet secretaries, top uniformed officials, and chiefs of offices. During the conference, concurrent Office of Civil Defense Administrator and NDRRMC Executive Director Usec. Ricardo Jalad presented government’s disaster preparedness plan for an effective response to the tropical cyclone. “Based on our analysis on the affected population and based on the exposure analysis by PAGASA, within the 125 kilometer radius of the center of the typhoon, there is a total of 4.3 million individuals that are exposed,” Jalad said. Classes cancelled, sea travel suspended in CALABARZON due to Ompong CALAMBA CITY- The Calabarzon Region may not be in the direct path of Typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut) but this powerful tropical cyclone with a huge diameter of 900 kilometers prompted authorities to suspend classes in five provinces and cancel sea travel at the Batangas port Friday to safeguard lives. In a bulletin issued 11 am on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Ompong is already 540 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora, moving northwest at 20 kilometers per hour (km/h). The Calabarzon provinces were placed under storm signal No. 1 beginning Thursday. The event was held at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Barangay Biga with Agrarian Secretary John R. Castriciones leading the distribution of CLOAs. Sec. Castriciones told farmers to treasure the land granted to them, and perform their responsibilities as prescribed under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program or the RA 6657. He said DAR will help them get access to financial services for their start-up capital to convert their newly- acquired lands to productive farms through loans which they could avail at 6% interest rate per annum with the Land Bank of the Philippines’ Accessible and Sustainable Lending Program.
