Roar! Take a wild walk back in time to when
dinosaurs ruled the earth! We begin our Jurassic adventure by becoming paleontologists
so we can learn how to study these dynamic
beasts. We take exploratory walks each day
to dig for dinosaur bones and discover fossils of all different kinds. Together, we create
ceramic dinosaur teeth, a larger-than-life Jurassic diorama and sculpted dinosaur eggs. We
top off our imaginative week with a visit from
the reptile friends from the Aspen Center for
Environmental Studies. To embark on this dino-mite adventure, all you need is your creativity
and a giant sense of wonder!
Sherri Kuecker received her B.F.A. in art education from the University of Arizona. A former
Children’s Program coordinator at Anderson
Ranch, she has been teaching students of all
ages for 20 years. She currently teaches and
makes art in Arizona, where her bead work is
exhibited in Phoenix galleries.

Tuition: $425 / Studio Fee: $20

All young aspiring artists are welcome to join
this in-depth exploration of the Japanese Tea
Ceremony. We learn to make our own clay tea
bowls—known as “yunomis”—plus tea treasure boxes and exotic trays using handbuilding
techniques. With our own handmade bamboo
brushes and unique stamps, we apply exquisite Japanese glazes and surface designs. We
study the different elements of the ceremony
by creating calligraphic hanging scrolls, fish
skeleton-printed kites and delicate Japanese
folding fans. To top it all off, we end the week
by whipping off our shoes, sipping tea and
munching on hand-rolled sushi while enjoying
our newly made teaware!
Get ready to pack your bags and kiss your
parents goodbye: we’re taking a trip across
America! Each day we travel to discover our
country’s rich national heritage. Join us as
we explore the culture, history and unique
landscapes of the American West, the Great
Plains, Alaska and the South. We’re inspired
by famous artists from these regions along the
way, including Ansel Adams, Georgia O’Keeffe
and Edward Hopper. We make 3-D totem poles,
woven baskets, Americana folk paintings and
giant landscape photographs. Don’t miss out
on this cross-country trip of a lifetime!
Sally Gierke has been an elementary school
teacher and professional potter for four
decades. Her work ranges from functional
objects to large-scale murals, some created
as multi-generational collaborations under her
direction. She has been artist-in-residence in
seven national parks and worked with kids
once before at Anderson Ranch.
