Thinking through Making
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: With a focus on the studio prototype,
this course is for the artist or designer interested in developing or strengthening a practice
of working through ideas with their hands. From
hot glue and cardboard to quick and effective
wood joinery and welding, we practice techniques that allow for rapid production. Along
with ample time for studio work, we engage
in dynamic dialog around discussions of work
made in class and concepts of the prototype
as finished sculpture. From there, we consider
the heady issues of contemporary design, craft
and art.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Cardboard, wood and
metal. String, hot glue and woodworking techniques, including finger joints, splines and
dowels, and welding of mild steel.
ACTIVITIES: The majority of class time is spent
constructing work and receiving individual
input and feedback. The first half of the week
is focused on slide presentations, demonstrations and workshop exercises. The second
half of the week is work-time-heavy with a few
group discussions.
FACULTY: Joshua West Smith graduated from
the Oregon College of Art and Craft. Before
returning to school he was a welder, fabricator
and machinist. Since 2001, he has run jjfab, a
design/build studio. He is also one half of the
curatorial team TILT Export: an independent
art
initiative.

Problem Seeking: exercising
Karl Burkheimer
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: This course is a playful search for
the fuel and inspiration of personal creativity.
Focused on discovery through the rendering of
ideas, this class is a series of exercises investigating new ways of looking at, thinking about
and making creative decisions. Creativity is
not taught, it is practiced, and ideas are just
the beginning of a creative process. The class
explores strategies of developing and interpreting ideas while seeking their strength as viable
solutions through models and prototypes.
Printing Molds for Slip Casting
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: 3-D printers are all the rage. Link the
“modern” with the tradition of slip casting in
this exciting new class focused on making
plaster molds via 3-D printers. Working with
our stock files and your basic designs built in
Rhino patterns, the molds to make the molds
are designed and printed digitally. The focus of
this workshop is the mold, but Paul covers how
to manipulate castings and surface designs as
well as the power of the narrative in his collage
style of work.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Wood, cardboard, foam
core, tape, glue and screws. Tools and methods of woodworking.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Rhino design software,
plaster molds made directly from the MakerBot
patterns, slip clay, drawing and painting on
bisqueware forms.
ACTIVITIES: Loose and playful exercises to
inspire creativity. Utilizing the resources and
capabilities of the wood studio, the class tackles several ways to expand creative solutions.
ACTIVITIES: Basic design in Rhino software,
making plaster molds from plastic patterns,
pouring slip, manipulating cast forms, bisque
firing, finish decorating and narrative building.
FACULTY: Karl Burkheimer is an associate professor and the chair of the Master of Fine
Arts in Craft program at Oregon College of
Art and Craft. He received his M.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University. His work has
been exhibited nationally and he has received
several awards, including a 2012 Individual
Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission and a 2013 U.S.-Japan Creative Artist
Fellowship.
FACULTY: Paul McMullan received his M.F.A.
from Alfred University. He has presented
his slip-cast and image-packed sculptures in
numerous solo and group exhibitions across
the U.S. and Europe. Recent shows include
“Hanging by a Thread” at Galleri Se Konst in
Falun, Sweden.
