The Abstract Icon: panel painting Digital Artmaking for Painters
Patsy Krebs
SKILL LEVEL: III - IV, basic Macintosh skills and
advanced painting or drawing skills required.
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: What was the meaning of “icon”
before it was appropriated by computer language? This class is an introduction to painting
on wood panels with acrylic paints by looking
at the rich traditions of European altar paintings, Eastern Orthodox icons and Native American totemic objects. We aim for the luminous
and evocative in our contemporary translation
of this ancient imagery. Working from a developed set of sketches we produce a group
of abstract paintings inspired by personal or
mythic symbolism.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We begin by developing
a series of sketches, tentatively positioning the
forms to be amplified on the panels. We build
images with a variety of techniques, including
impasto texture underpainting, opaque acrylic,
glazing and washes and masking. Materials
include matte or glossy acrylic paint, screens,
translucent wash, iridescent mediums and
gold or metal leaf.
ACTIVITIES: Slide presentations and discussion.
One-on-one work with students plus group
demonstrations. We end the day with time for
sharing our work, observations, illuminations
and questions gleaned from the day’s labors.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Drawing, painting, collage and natural objects are combined with
digitally-found images, scanned images and
things created on the computer. We learn the
best methods for scanning 2- and 3-D objects
and artwork and investigate collage practices
with and without the use of a computer.
ACTIVITIES: Critique and discussion about work
in progress, demonstrations of digital imaging
and collage techniques, and plenty of time to
practice these techniques under the guidance
of the instructors and studio assistant.

SKILL LEVEL: III
CONCEPT: Paint and collage are vehicles to creative trajectories. By working in layers, with
paint as a large component, we incorporate
found objects, photographs (both original and
appropriated), drawings, text, personal writings and organic matter: anything that can be
adhered to the surface of a panel or paper. We
master numerous transfer techniques and the
process of good adhesion. During this intensive, we are expected to alternate between
expressive creativity and strict editing of what
we are making.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Water-based acrylic
paints applied in a variety of ways. Layering
various surfaces to build our images using
materials most suited to individual projects. A
range of painting media and grounds.
ACTIVITIES: Painting, disassembling and reassembling materials; learning and using different
transfer processes; some use of the computer
and printer. Demonstrations and lectures. Several field trips to find source material: hardware
and thrift stores and the county dump.
FACULTY: Roberto Juarez is a New York painter,
printmaker and public artist known for large
mixed-media work. His work is included in the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn
Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum and
the LA County Museum of Art.

CONCEPT: Artists are drawn to using digital imagery and technology as a way to advance their
paintings and collages. This course teaches painters how to make personal and intimate images
by combining digital and handmade techniques.
Using these techniques, including the Juarez
method—which applies layers of transparency
using rice paper and images—we create a visual
and contextual conversation in our work.
