Join us to create a small collection of their stories: their passions, their struggles, their relationships to the community and the landscape surrounding them. We use this project as a pathway to teach the foundations of documentary photography and multimedia. Media & Techniques:  Students explore digital photography and digital editing with iPhoto and iMovie software. Students may elect to use simple sound recording equipment for interviews. Students photograph using digital cameras. Activities: We use daily shooting assignments to investigate how photographic choices of framing, point of view and selective moments convey emotion and stories. Students explore the ethics of documentary work and the process of establishing rapport with subjects as they gather content and then edit that content into compelling visual narratives. Faculty:  Kate Lapides’ compelling work as a documentary photographer has taken her around the globe to photograph for organizations such as Save The Children and The International Rescue Committee. She is a two-time recipient of an Individual Artist grant from the Colorado Council on the Arts. Her recent collaborative multimedia projects have received grants from The Big Sky Institute of Montana and The Maine Humanities Council. Her work is exhibited nationally.   Sponsored by Claudia Potamkin i n fo @ a n d ers o n r a n c h . o r g July 5 - 9 Layers of Meaning: Photoshop for art making Isaac AlaridPease    Ages: 13 to 17 / 1:30 - 5:00 pm Tuition: $425 / Studio Fee: $75 Code: K0511  Enrollment Limit: 14 Concept:  Layering is the conceptual anchor and vehicle as we move beyond familiar symbols into altered visual language. Create new effects using Photoshop to manipulate images by overlapping, underlapping, varying transparency and merging. Explore the meanings and ideas behind layered art: What are we trying to communicate? How can we represent the same idea with different techniques? Media & Techniques:  We use the layering tool in Adobe Photoshop to compose scanned images, hand painted surfaces and photos. Specific Photoshop techniques include rotating, distorting, enlarging and reducing. We learn to extract imagery and repeat processes to achieve new results. We work on MacBook computers and use digital cameras, scanners and Epson Stylus printers along with traditional hand painting techniques. Activities: We paint, scan, capture images via digital photography and then compose the images on the computer. We learn computer, camera and traditional painting techniques, create multiple compositions and print our favorites to take home. Faculty: Urban folk artist Isaac AlaridPease has taught art workshops in Albuquerque, and Santa Fe, New Mexico as well as Puebla, Mexico. His most extensive experience has been as program director, workshop instructor at Working Classroom Inc., an acclaimed street conservatory for youth in Albuquerque.
