Use digital media with confidence: from beginning to end, capture to file management. Nurture your creative side while you take technical control of your digital SLR camera. Learn to set ISO, shutters and apertures, coupled with a tripod and specialized filters. Then explore simple postproduction techniques to realize your artistic vision. We emphasize technical skills, creative picture making, editing and evaluating images. Media & Techniques: Image capture uses digital SLR cameras, tripods, multiple lenses, neutral density and polarizing filters. Basic digital processing is taught using Adobe Lightroom and/or Adobe Photoshop. Confronting the Portrait Concept: Think like a director by creating situations–commonplace or outrageous–in which your subjects are free to reveal themselves, or not. We confront the many subtle aspects of portrait photography in theory and in practice. We address issues of approaching strangers, setting the stage, developing collaboration and directing the subject. We examine body language and gesture, the psychological implications of light and the structure of the frame. Media & Techniques: Students shoot with digital cameras and project images for initial edits. Final editing is done from digital prints made during class time. Activities: Daily lectures as well as hands-on technical demonstrations, address digital camera and lens functions, shooting, downloading and editing. Practice every day on shooting field trips in the magnificent Colorado landscape, then sum up your experience with group discussion and critique. Activities:  Students photograph, edit and write about their work. We begin with a portfolio review and discuss each student’s project for the week. Each day students photograph and present rough edits. We work together to define our focus and present a cohesive group of images. Slide shows present historical and contemporary fine art and editorial portraiture. Discussions center on work that lies at the intersection of documentary and fine art. Faculty:  Angie Buckley received her MFA in Photography from Arizona State University. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including the Savannah College of Art and Design, New York University, Rhode Island School of Design and Clos de L’Abbye Gallerie in Paris, France. Buckley teaches in the Department of Art at the University of Colorado Denver. Faculty:  Suzanne Opton is the recipient of a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Austin Museum of Art, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Brooklyn Art Museum. Investigate new transfer techniques to integrate photographic images and text directly onto painted surfaces. We use traditional collage and photomontage with new processes that allow for opaque and translucent layers. Reductive methods such as sanding and scraping reveal the history of earlier photographic layers and suggest an archeological approach to image development.
