advanced topics in painting
David Hornung
SKILL LEVEL: I
Concept: This practical course is based on
“Color: a Workshop for Artists and Designers,”
a textbook written by David Hornung after years
of teaching color at the Rhode Island School
of Design. We begin with a series of studies
that explore the structure and interaction of
color. As the week progresses, we examine
strategies for color research and engage in
personal experimentation. If we’re curious but
somewhat apprehensive about color we gain
confidence. If we enter with some facility we
discover ways to broaden our knowledge.
Media & Techniques: Students make a series
of approximately 20 small color studies in
acryla gouache on paper. The techniques
include direct painting or, for those shy about
their painting skills, painted paper collage.
Activities: Each day we create color studies,
view slide presentations and discuss our work.
The majority of our time is spent making things.
*This is the first in a series of two workshops,
followed by David’s “Color Collage.” Students
attending both workshops receive a 20% discount
on session two. Students are encouraged to take
either or both.
Tuition: $920 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1120
Studio Fee: $75 Code: D0204 Enrollment Limit 10

SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
Concept: Collage is an art form in and of itself,
but it can also be a “laboratory of ideas,”
where an artist or designer can conduct experiments in form and content that can later be
transferred to other media, such as painting
or quilt making. Its improvisational character
provokes visual surprise, allowing for chance
events and the unconscious mind to intervene
in the creative process. We make collages to
sharpen formal skills in composition, color and
shape making while highlighting our individual,
creative preferences.
Media & Techniques: Students make a series
of small collages and/or photo montages using
painted paper and found materials.
Activities: We begin with a few initial assignments to establish useful techniques and
reveal our creative tendencies. As class progresses, we pursue a personal direction with
guidance from the instructor. By week’s end,
we produce a small portfolio of collages that
will serve as the nucleus for continued study.
Faculty: David Hornung has been teaching art
on the college level since 1973, and is currently
on the painting faculty at Adelphi University.
The second edition of his book, “Color: a Workshop for Artists and Designers,” was released
in 2012. David divides his time between Kingston and Brooklyn, N.Y.
