SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
SKILL LEVEL: I - II
CONCEPT: Join Russell Baldon in a fun and vigorous workshop exploring chair design, creativity, ergonomics, structure and woodworking
techniques. He introduces a variety of joinery
techniques using hand tools and machinery in
traditional and nontraditional ways. Through
hand-on projects and experiments, we build linear structures to create fascinating and expressive chairs, blending conceptual and conventional approaches to design.
CONCEPT: One of the joys of making furniture is
creating something you can actually use. This
workshop covers basic woodworking techniques and design, offering a nurturing and nonintimidating environment for the novice woodworker. No question or demonstration request
is too simple. Expect to leave the course with
an inspired imagination and the confidence and
skills to continue making things with wood.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Kiln-dried lumber. Students are exposed to a variety of advanced
woodworking techniques. We’re challenged to
find innovative solutions for chair designs while
discussing historic trends and issues involved
in building a chair.
ACTIVITIES: Slide presentations and demonstrations to expand knowledge of joinery techniques.
Students quickly build a chair, utilizing only eight
pieces of hardwood. From this exercise we
develop more elaborate chair designs with oneon-one time to discuss individual projects.
FACULTY: Russell Baldon is the chair of the
Furniture Department at California College
of the Arts in San Francisco. He graduated
from San Diego State University with an
MFA in furniture.
