Pottery: form and technique
September 9 - 27
Jeff Oestreich & Doug Casebeer
Andy Brayman, Jason Walker &
Ralph Scala
SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: Creating clay forms is a unique
expression of individual emotion and design.
Two distinguished artists share their signature
shapes and techniques in this course, where
we learn to develop and refine our personal
pottery forms. Jeff and Doug share a combined
history of more than 60 years in the studio.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Stoneware clays and
slips. Bisque firing, throwing and handbuilding
processes are demonstrated. We also use the
extruder and slab roller.
ACTIVITIES: Jeff and Doug present two demonstrations each day, sharing mornings and
afternoon sessions. Slide shows and lectures
on pottery design.
FACULTY: Jeff Oestreich was trained as a studio potter while serving as an apprentice to
Bernard Leach. Returning to Minnesota in the
early 1970s, Jeff set up a studio outside of
Minneapolis where he is still making pottery
today. His work is exhibited worldwide in venues including the Victoria and Albert Museum
in London, the Smithsonian and the LA County
Museum of Art.

Fusing Surface & Form
Skill Level: II - IV
Concept: Clay objects are defined by two primary features: surface and shape. This workshop explores interactions between the form
and surface qualities of ceramic objects. We
employ a variety of techniques—handbuilding,
wheel throwing and mold making—to devise
and test surface treatments. Our objective is
to accentuate, decorate and communicate
a range of different ideas. We start with the
brush, move into underglazes, inglazes and
overglazes, then explore atmospheric firing
methods to enhance the interplay between
structure and design.
Media & Techniques: We sample a large variety of ceramic processes, introducing new
techniques while reinvigorating traditional
methods. Stoneware and porcelain. Handbuilding, throwing and mold making. Cone 10
atmospheric, reduction and oxidation kilns.
Slips, underglazes, decals and china paints.
Jason Walker, Untitled
Jason Walker received his MFA from Penn.
State University. His work is in numerous collections, including the Fine Arts Museum of San
Francisco and the Carnegie Mellon Museum in
Pittsburgh. He is currently represented by the
Ferrin Gallery and works as a studio artist in
Washington state.
