Figurative Woodcut Prints

Water Media
Skill Level: II
Skill Level: III
Concept: Focus on the figure as we draw
from models and carve wood planks to make
woodblock prints. Students are introduced to a
variety of block printing techniques with both
wood and linoleum. We cover both water- and
oil-based printing techniques, as well as multiple blocks and reduction methods for adding
color to a print.
Concept: From Chardin to Louise Bourgeois,
artists have long used content from in their
surroundings to discuss compelling emotional
images. In this workshop, we discuss the visual
metaphor as a rich way to express deeper
meaning. We guide students to develop their
own visual voices by dovetailing imagery in
their artwork with the emotional content they
would like to express. Come open to new
ideas of imagery and content.
Media & Techniques: Woodblock printing
with both oil- and water-based inks, optional
linoleum block prints printed in oil, hand
printing, press printing and traditional Japanese carving.
Activities: Students work directly from the
model as they experiment with drawing and
plate design. By mid-week, we commit to a
more finished block print, working intensely with
the model at first and then less so, as we turn
to carving and printing the blocks. The instructor
works closely with each student to tailor individual goals for the workshop. Group demonstrations are interspersed with studio time.
Faculty: Daniel Heyman teaches woodblock
printing at the Rhode Island School of Design,
Swarthmore College and Princeton University.
Heyman received a Guggenheim Fellowship
and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts. His work is
in many public collections, including the Library
of Congress and the Baltimore Museum of
Art. His exhibition, Bearing Witness: Portraits
of Abu Ghraib Torture Victims and Other Paintings, is currently touring the United States.

Skill Level: III
Concept: Both translucent and fluid, watercolor
invites the painter to find the balance between
spontaneity and control. In this workshop, we
use watercolor to explore the evolution of
abstract form from observed reality, process
in nature, conceptual intention and vision. Students arrive with a kernel subject, such as a
sketch, photo, piece of writing, or considered
idea and, from this seed, we subtract, magnify, isolate, redefine, iconize and translate.
Each student may work in his or her choice of
water-based paints and workable surfaces as
we complete a small suite of works that interweave throughout a central subject.
Media & Techniques: Watercolor paints applied
to watercolor paper with soft bristle brushes;
sponge and masking techniques with assorted
fluid acrylics; and inks on a variety of paper and
cloth surfaces.
Activities: Daily activities include presentations of visual images, discussions of abstract
painting and student-instructor consultations.
Class time also includes demonstrations and
group feedback.
Faculty: Patsy Krebs earned her MFA from Claremont Graduate School. She works in acrylic
on wood panel, and watercolor on paper. Patsy
has taught at San Francisco State University,
San Francisco Art Institute and California College of Art, and is currently teaching at Dominican University. She is represented by Haines
Gallery in San Francisco.
