The Power of Paint
Rosalyn Schwartz
Skill Level: III
Concept: Try as we might, good ideas do not
automatically translate into good paintings.
This mode of working can often turn out to be
a problem rather than a solution. In this workshop students increase their technical knowledge and conceptual understanding of how
formal painting choices fundamentally contribute to the success of a painting. Learn to rely
less on words to explain the content of a work
and more on the paint’s ability to physically
represent an idea. Ideally, the work becomes
more visually compelling in the process.
Media & Techniques: Oil painting (preferably)
or acrylic on canvas, sketchbook drawing, charcoal, pencils, pens, collected visual resources.
Activities: We begin with a brief overview of
modern and contemporary painting. We discuss form and content as it applies to painting
and various working methodologies. Studies
develop into completed paintings by the end
of the week. There are daily group and individual critiques.
Faculty: Rosalyn Schwartz taught painting and
drawing for 20 years at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign. She has also taught at
West Virginia University, Morgantown, University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She received
a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship,
a Bush Foundation Fellowship and a McKnight
Foundation Fellowship. In 2013 Rosalyn will
have a show at the McNay Museum of Art in
San Antonio.

Phyllis Bramson
Skill Level: III
Concept: Expand drawing into the threedimensional realm during this multimedia
workshop. This course addresses the sensory
exchange between space, touch, media, play
and improvisation. We engage in a conversation between conceptual thinking and the sensory, by employing drawing and the intersection of media and subject matter.
Media & Techniques: Found materials, projections, stenciling and collage, found photographs, xeroxes, drawing and painting.
Activities: This is an intensive workshop; students are expected to work at night as well
as during class. The instructor provides daily
feedback.
Faculty: Phyllis Bramson teaches in the graduate department of painting and drawing at the
Art Institute of Chicago. She is a recipient of
many honors and awards, including three NEA
grants. She has exhibited at the New Museum
of Contemporary Art, Cultural Center of Chicago, Boulder Art Museum and Renaissance
Society at the University of Chicago. Group
exhibitions include: the Seattle Art Museum,
Art Institute of Chicago, Contemporary
Museum of Art/Chicago, Smart Museum and
New Museum of Contemporary Art at the Corcoran Museum’s 43rd Biennial.

from one of contemporary art’s most exciting

tackle key elements of each participant’s work
and vision.

critiques and group discussion.
Activities: Participants engage in their artistic practice in a collegial atmosphere of other
working artists and receive one-on-one and
group feedback on their work. Faculty studio
visits and/or group discussions take place each
day, but students are expected to work the
entire class time.
