We will be making some jewelry pieces, precut forms, and doing work on flat sheets of copper, along with making functional items. CONCEPT: Come take a journey through the history and traditions of clay. This workshop will explore the historical and contemporary aspects of ceramics while learning basic vocabulary and techniques of handbuilding and wheel throwing. Students will gain many technical skills and have more time to practice as opposed to producing lots of work. Enamored with Enamel  June 23 - 27 Art Explorations for Artists with Special Needs  Jointly presented by Challenge Aspen Kit Bardwell & Tina Blatter    Ages 6 and up, all abilities, 9:00 - 11:30 am Tuition: $230 Code: K0407  Enrollment Limit 14 Registration is through Challenge Aspen www.challengeaspen.org, 970-923-0578 CONCEPT:  Students will explore the many ways that a variety of media can be manipulated. The emphasis will be on process over product with each day dedicated to a different medium. The goal for each structured exploration is to give students the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills, take risks and experience successes. This workshop is made possible by generous support from Craig O’Brien. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Classes will include handbuilding with clay, watercolor painting, and tactile collage using mixed media. Each class will be structured so that the students will have time to explore the possibilities as well as the limitations of the medium. There will be less emphasis on producing a polished work of art, but students can anticipate having a finished piece for each of the classes. ACTIVITIES: Each day will focus on an exploration in a different me dium. PREREQUISITES: Ages 6 and up, all abilities. This class is designed to be inclusive of children with disabilities. The instructors are prepared to make creative adaptations for each student as needed. FACULTY: Kit Bardwell has been a teaching artist for over 30 years. For the past five years she has been the Program Director for Accessible Arts, Inc. in Kansas City, Kansas, where she teaches ceramics and mixed media for the Kansas State School for the Blind. Through Accessible Arts, she also presents workshops in music, creative dance and drama to children of all abilities.   Tina Blatter is a visual artist who has been legally blind since birth. She obtained degrees in Special Education and counseling after she was told she shouldn’t enter art school. For the past 27 years she has exhibited her unique tactile collages and worked as a teaching artist. June 30 - July 3 Design Your Deck: skateboard MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We’ll be using copper, glazes, and precut forms to make flat or concave creations. Special tools will help in applying glaze to metal, which will then be heated in a special kiln. ACTIVITIES: Copper enameling is a method of adhering glazes onto copper in a small kiln, similar to glazing ceramics, and is something you won’t find in an ordinary classroom. Unlike working with clay, you don’t get your hands dirty, but creating these sophisticated works of art requires concentration, and attention to detail. FACULTY:  Evelyn Siegel has taught generations of students both at Anderson Ranch and at Fort Worth Country Day School in her home state of Texas. Many of her students have become professional potters, painters, artistic designers and historians. This workshop is meant for skateboard enthusiasts of all types who have ever wanted to add that unique edge to their board. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Skateboard kit (including deck, wheels, grip tape and other parts). We’ll be using special paint. FACULTY: Kate Fisher received a BA in Studio Art and Art History from St. Olaf College. She holds an MFA in Ceramics from the University of North Texas. As the Education Supervisor at the Octagon Center for the Arts, she designed programs for both children and adults. She has been both an intern and a resident at Anderson Ranch. Jointly presented by Aspen Film Joel Lee    Ages 9-12 years old, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm Tuition: $230  Studio Fee: $55 Code: K0712  Enrollment Limit 10 CONCEPT: This is a workshop dedicated to creating imagery through video. We will make ideas come to life using digital video cameras, digital editing techniques, and your own creativity. Working together, you will make movies starring your own actors and using your own directors. Bring your ideas, an open mind, and a willingness to learn about the art of video production. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital video camera (bring your own if you have one), video editing software (iMovie) and Apple computers will be provided. Camera techniques will include exposure, composition and lighting. Editing techniques will include transitions and continuity. Techniques in storytelling, acting, and directing as well. FACULTY:  Joel Lee is a videographer and video editor. He is a graduate of Colorado State University’s awardwinning television broadcasting program. After working in the advertising world creating commercials, he made the leap to television and has created everything from a five-second graphic to hour-long programs. Recently he has made a television series called “The Wine Travelers,” worked as a video director for the X Games, and edited a full-length documentary. FACULTY: Jeremy Silas Ulibarri has been teaching art to youth and teens since 2005. He has exhibited work in the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Museo de las Americas, CHAC Art Gallery, and Andeken. 1-888-353-4710 ACTIVITIES: At the start of class, students will watch demonstrations, look at visual examples, and have discussions. Time will alternate between working on the wheel or handbuilding so that students can have individualized attention and develop skills and technique. Lights, Camera, Action!  ACTIVITIES:  Students will begin by looking at skateboard designs and then transferring their ideas onto their own deck. There will be an introduction to slabs, coils, pinch pots and throwing on the wheel. All students will participate in a collaborative group project and also take home a permanent piece. July 14 - 18 ACTIVITIES: This workshop will introduce kids to a world of video editing. The days will start with a “production schedule” consisting of set-ups, rehearsals, shoots, retakes, and dailies. After shooting is completed, teams will begin “assembling” the movies through video editing. O R G July 21 - 25 Wild Realities on Planet You  Sarabeth Berk    Ages 9-12 years old, 1:00 - 3:30 pm Tuition: $230  Studio Fee: $55 Code: K0815  Enrollment Limit 10 CONCEPT: If you could create a world, what would it be like? As students explore Earth, other planets, communities, and their personal interests, they will begin to design the traits and qualities of their own dream planet. Digital tools, such as Kid Pix, will be used in combination with other art materials toward the creation of a final project. Students will consider everything from plant life and animals, to architecture, recreation and transportation, in deciding how to build an ideal world. Individualized approaches to the final project will be encouraged. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES:  Students will work with Kid Pix on Apple computers. They will also use paint, cardboard, papiermâché, drawing materials and other mixed media. ACTIVITIES:  Time will be spent discussing ideas, looking at resources, sketching, designing on the computer, and building a planet with mixed media materials. FACULTY:  Sarabeth Berk is currently the Children’s Program Coordinator at Anderson Ranch. She is a certified K-12 art educator and has a Masters of Art in Teaching Art and Design Education from RISD, and a BA in Visual and Critical Studies from the Art Institute of Chicago.
