CONCEPT: Learn how to create the beautiful sparkly and colorful metallic designs seen on jewelry and other metal objects.
We will be making some jewelry pieces, precut forms, and
doing work on flat sheets of copper, along with making functional items.
CONCEPT: Come take a journey through the history and traditions of clay. This workshop will explore the historical and
contemporary aspects of ceramics while learning basic
vocabulary and techniques of handbuilding and wheel throwing. Students will gain many technical skills and have more
time to practice as opposed to producing lots of work.

Art Explorations for Artists
with Special Needs
Jointly presented by Challenge Aspen
Kit Bardwell & Tina Blatter
Ages 6 and up, all abilities, 9:00 - 11:30 am
Tuition: $230
Code: K0407 Enrollment Limit 14
Registration is through Challenge Aspen
www.challengeaspen.org, 970-923-0578
CONCEPT: Students will explore the many ways that a
variety of media can be manipulated. The emphasis will
be on process over product with each day dedicated to a
different medium. The goal for each structured exploration is to give students the opportunity to develop critical
thinking skills, take risks and experience successes. This
workshop is made possible by generous support from
Craig O’Brien.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Classes will include handbuilding
with clay, watercolor painting, and tactile collage using
mixed media. Each class will be structured so that the
students will have time to explore the possibilities as
well as the limitations of the medium. There will be less
emphasis on producing a polished work of art, but students can anticipate having a finished piece for each of
the classes.
ACTIVITIES: Each day will focus on an exploration in a different me dium.
PREREQUISITES: Ages 6 and up, all abilities. This class is
designed to be inclusive of children with disabilities. The
instructors are prepared to make creative adaptations for
each student as needed.
FACULTY: Kit Bardwell has been a teaching artist for over
30 years. For the past five years she has been the Program Director for Accessible Arts, Inc. in Kansas City,
Kansas, where she teaches ceramics and mixed media
for the Kansas State School for the Blind. Through
Accessible Arts, she also presents workshops in music,
creative dance and drama to children of all abilities.
Tina Blatter is a visual artist who has been legally blind
since birth. She obtained degrees in Special Education
and counseling after she was told she shouldn’t enter
art school. For the past 27 years she has exhibited her
unique tactile collages and worked as a teaching artist.
June 30 - July 3
Design Your Deck: skateboard
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We’ll be using copper, glazes, and precut forms to make flat or concave creations. Special tools will
help in applying glaze to metal, which will then be heated in
a special kiln.
ACTIVITIES: Copper enameling is a method of adhering glazes
onto copper in a small kiln, similar to glazing ceramics, and is
something you won’t find in an ordinary classroom. Unlike
working with clay, you don’t get your hands dirty, but creating
these sophisticated works of art requires concentration, and
attention to detail.
FACULTY: Evelyn Siegel has taught generations of students
both at Anderson Ranch and at Fort Worth Country Day
School in her home state of Texas. Many of her students
have become professional potters, painters, artistic designers and historians.
Jeremy Silas Ulibarri
Ages 9-12 years old, 1:00 - 4:00 pm (no class Friday, July 4)
Tuition: $230 Studio Fee: $50
Code: K0509 Enrollment Limit 14
CONCEPT: Ollie into this workshop and leave making a statement the next time you ride. This workshop is meant for
skateboard enthusiasts of all types who have ever wanted to
add that unique edge to their board.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Skateboard kit (including deck, wheels,
grip tape and other parts). We’ll be using special paint.
FACULTY: Kate Fisher received a BA in Studio Art and Art History from St. Olaf College. She holds an MFA in Ceramics
from the University of North Texas. As the Education Supervisor at the Octagon Center for the Arts, she designed programs for both children and adults. She has been both an
intern and a resident at Anderson Ranch.

Bring your ideas, an open mind, and a willingness to
learn about the art of video production.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital video camera (bring your

and Apple computers will be provided. Camera techniques will include exposure, composition and lighting.
Editing techniques will include transitions and continuity.

ACTIVITIES: At the start of class, students will watch demonstrations, look at visual examples, and have discussions. Time
will alternate between working on the wheel or handbuilding so that students can have individualized attention and
develop skills and technique.
Lights, Camera, Action!
ACTIVITIES: Students will begin by looking at skateboard
designs and then transferring their ideas onto their own deck.
After adding grip tape and final assembly, they’ll be ready to
test their one-of-a-kind creation on the road.
40 W W W.ANDER SONRANCH.ORG
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will use a variety of ceramic
techniques to execute their artistic visions. There will be an
introduction to slabs, coils, pinch pots and throwing on the
wheel. All students will participate in a collaborative group
project and also take home a permanent piece.
July 14 - 18
ACTIVITIES: This workshop will introduce kids to a world
of video editing. The days will start with a “production
schedule” consisting of set-ups, rehearsals, shoots, retakes, and dailies. After shooting is completed, teams
will begin “assembling” the movies through video editing. Projects will be finished by end of the week.

Tuition: $230 Studio Fee: $55
Code: K0815 Enrollment Limit 10
CONCEPT: If you could create a world, what would it be like?
As students explore Earth, other planets, communities, and
their personal interests, they will begin to design the traits and
qualities of their own dream planet. Digital tools, such as Kid

from plant life and animals, to architecture, recreation and
transportation, in deciding how to build an ideal world. Individualized approaches to the final project will be encouraged.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will work with Kid Pix on
Apple computers. They will also use paint, cardboard, papiermâché, drawing materials and other mixed media.
ACTIVITIES: Time will be spent discussing ideas, looking at
resources, sketching, designing on the computer, and building a planet with mixed media materials.
FACULTY: Sarabeth Berk is currently the Children’s Program
Coordinator at Anderson Ranch. She is a certified K-12 art
educator and has a Masters of Art in Teaching Art and Design
Education from RISD, and a BA in Visual and Critical Studies
