ACTIVITIES: All handbuilding techniques; drawing, carving,
texture, and slip application; cone 6 electric firing, and exploratory and creative exercises. We will watch several slide
shows of historical and contemporary work, with ample time
for individual projects, group and individual discussions. The
September studio session offers more time to work under the
guidance of several experienced artists. Class starts 9:00 am,
Saturday, September 6, and runs every day for two straight
weeks. Faculty demonstrations are every other day, giving
ample student work time. There is a surcharge on housing
for the extra nights.
PREREQUISITES: Students desiring quality studio time who
have some experience forming, glazing, and firing.

CONCEPT: This is a very rare opportunity to work with master
Juan Quezada. Quezada developed the ancient Casas Grandes
pottery tradition into a vibrant contemporary art movement. He
is now in his late sixties and at the height of his career. He
has chosen Anderson Ranch’s two-week session as his sole
North American workshop this year because he says teaching
in this intensive atmosphere makes a real difference in an artist’s development. Quezada and Wisner have a long-standing
mentorship, and their teaching partnership provides students
with a uniquely exciting learning environment.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will handbuild pottery and
sculptural vessels using a coil and pinch technique. Methods
for surface decoration include burnishing, texturing and painting. Primitive and contemporary pit-firing techniques will be
used for black-on-black and polychrome pottery.
ACTIVITIES: Juan and Michael will share daily demonstrations. Both also share a desire to work individually with each
student. Instruction will begin with the basics and proceed
through all the forming steps.
