PREREQUISITES:  Students desiring quality studio time who have some experience forming, glazing, and firing. Juan Quezada, Vase (detail) Michael Wisner, Black Diamond Donut (detail) CONCEPT: This is a very rare opportunity to work with master Juan Quezada. Quezada developed the ancient Casas Grandes pottery tradition into a vibrant contemporary art movement. He is now in his late sixties and at the height of his career. He has chosen Anderson Ranch’s two-week session as his sole North American workshop this year because he says teaching in this intensive atmosphere makes a real difference in an artist’s development. Quezada and Wisner have a long-standing mentorship, and their teaching partnership provides students with a uniquely exciting learning environment. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will handbuild pottery and sculptural vessels using a coil and pinch technique. Methods for surface decoration include burnishing, texturing and painting. Primitive and contemporary pit-firing techniques will be used for black-on-black and polychrome pottery. ACTIVITIES:  Juan and Michael will share daily demonstrations. Both also share a desire to work individually with each student. Instruction will begin with the basics and proceed through all the forming steps.
