ACTIVITIES: Most days will begin with demonstrations by the instructors, followed by hands-on time for students. Slide lectures and class discussions will illustrate many and varied ceramic forms and surfaces. PREREQUISITES: All that is required is a genuine interest in and enthusiasm for playing in the mud! All levels welcome. John Gill, Ewer (detail) Andrea Gill, Sesme (detail) CONCEPT: This workshop will focus on handbuilding to make vessels and pots. John will share his exceptional skills and approach to building and glazing, while Andrea will add her expertise in patterning and layering glazes. John and Andrea are highly experienced teachers, well-known and respected at the Ranch for their warm and generous spirits. This workshop is an opportunity for students to elevate the quality and content of their own work. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Stoneware and high-fire clays, oxidation and reduction firings. Slab and handbuilding techniques. Attention will be given to glazing strategies, using high-fire glazes. FACULTY:  Christa Assad joined the Kansas City Art Institute faculty in 2007 after an eight-year stint as a potter and gallery owner in San Francisco. She was awarded a J. William Fulbright Research and Travel Grant (1993), and her work is in the permanent collections of The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, The Ceramic Research Center at Arizona State University Museum, The Penn State Fulbright Scholar Collection, and Copia, The American Center for Food, Wine & The Arts in Napa, CA. Publications include Garth Clark’s Shards, Kevin A. Hluch’s The Art of Contemporary Pottery, and Lark Books’ 500 Teapots and 500 Pitchers. She earned an MFA from Indiana University in 2000.   Andy Brayman holds an MFA in ceramics from Alfred University (1998). His work combines traditional craft, industrial processes, and contemporary art strategies. In 2005, he founded The Matter Factory in Kansas City, part studio, part laboratory, and part factory. In addition to producing objects of his design, the company contains a collaborative element in which guest designers and artists are invited to develop objects for production. ACTIVITIES: John and Andrea will share daily demonstrations, advancing both skills and ideas. Participants will create a group of handbuilt pots and vessels. The workshop is oriented toward the making of vessel forms. August 11 - 15 PREREQUISITES:  Some experience in ceramics is needed, although other art experience helps if the student has not worked with clay. He has received numerous awards, including an NEA and New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships. He is represented by the Kraushaar Gallery (NYC) and Harvey Meadows Gallery, Aspen, CO.   Andrea Gill teaches at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. She holds an MFA from Alfred and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has won fellowships from the NEA, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Rhode Island School of Design.
