Handbuilt Pots: form, function and
context
Gail Kendall, Half Gold Dish
CONCEPT: Using earthenware clays and handbuilding techniques, this workshop will explore composition and content
on serving dishes. The first day and a half will be using wet
clay only, followed by surface decoration on bisqueware.
Field-and-frame and contour panel design motifs will be presented along with other sources from ceramic history and
contemporary art. Participants will aim to create works in
which the pots are well-articulated with an emphasis on the
marriage of form and content. The goal: to make work that
invites use and enhances pleasure at the table.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Terra cotta clays and bisque pottery
will be used in this workshop. Students can also bring their
own bisque earthenware. Traditional handbuilding techniques
including slab, coil, and the use of simple molds. Slips, stains,
and terra sigilattas will be used to create everything from
simple to highly complex decorative surfaces.
ACTIVITIES: Each morning will start with a short technical
demonstration. In the afternoon, slide lectures, discussions
or demonstrations will address aesthetic issues.
PREREQUISITES: All levels.
FACULTY: Gail Kendall has been working in clay since 1970.
She is the Hixson-Lied Professor of Art at the University of
