Getting Creative
with the CNC Router
SKILL LEVEL: II - III
SKILL LEVEL: II – IV
SKILL LEVEL: II – IV
CONCEPT: This workshop explores the relationship
between writing code and digital fabrication. The focus
is 2-D techniques using the laser cutter, CNC router, and
vinyl cutter to draw, etch, cut, and more. With Processing
software and access to the fabrication lab, each student
will explore individual ideas within this emerging way of
making and thinking. Tutorials and code samples will be
balanced with individual reviews and time to work in the
studio.
CONCEPT: The CNC (computer numerically controlled)
router is known for precision and accuracy in massproduced designs. But for the creative designer and
maker, it is also a powerful tool for realizing more intimate
forms of self-expression. This hands-on workshop aims
to demystify the CNC process and explore its artistic
potential. Students are introduced to multi-axis milling
for furniture and sculpture.
CONCEPT: In this class we concentrate on the
relationship between design, technique, and fabrication,
specifically in steel and using compound curves.
Compound curves can be glamorous and seductive due to
their visceral nature. These biomorphic forms are difficult
to achieve in steel, and even trickier to plan. Vivian takes
you through techniques she uses in digital and manual
design. Technical demonstrations and studio time will be
augmented with discussions and presentations. Together
we explore how we affect materials and how those
materials can reflect ourselves and the world around us.
Code & Digital Fabrication
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students write code to
create images for high-resolution digital prints using the
processing environment and print on digital printers. No
programming experience is necessary, but participants
should be very comfortable using computers. Too much
programming experience is discouraged.
ACTIVITIES: We learn through short presentations
on technique/concept and studio work sessions. The
instructor tutors students individually during studio time.
New techniques are introduced in the first three days
with concentration on a final project during the last two
days.
FACULTY: Casey Reas is an internationally recognized
