The Perfect Union:
paint & the digital image
Holly Roberts & Jonathan Singer
SKILL LEVEL: II - III (Some experience with Photoshop or
imaging software required.)
CONCEPT: Learn to paint expressively and apply new
discoveries to the art of photography by creating rich,
varied backgrounds for your digital images. When we paint
expressively, we access the most immediate and direct
links to our creative selves. By understanding how different
media work together, learn which processes are most
effective in discovering your creative voice. We explore
transfers, gluing techniques, painting techniques, surfaces,
supports, media compatibility and use of acrylic paints.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use paint, digital
images, found objects, organic objects, recycled art (both
personal and not), 3-D objects and anything we can bring
into the studio to work with. Students bring their own
digital images to use in class.
ACTIVITIES: We participate in demonstrations of digital
imaging and collage techniques, acrylic painting, transfer
techniques including direct paper and DASS transfers;
use of transparencies in layering of images, gluing
techniques, and the use of different materials to apply the
digital image to the painted surface. Image presentations
showcase artists using these techniques.
FACULTY: Holly Roberts has exhibited nationally and
internationally and published three monographs of her
work, including “Holly Roberts,” “Holly Roberts: Works
1989-1999” and “Holly Roberts: Works 2000-2009.”
In 2013, her work was exhibited at the Museo de Arte
Contemporáneo de Oaxaca in Mexico.
