SKILL LEVEL: II - III
CONCEPT: Explore the world through the lens of
photography in a direct and spontaneous way. The
emphasis of this workshop is on the creation of a unique
way of seeing along with an intuitive way of editing. We
investigate the emotional and psychological implications
of working in color vs. black and white, how to photograph
in a culture other than our own, the difference between
images in a book and on the wall and how projects can
evolve into books and exhibitions.
CONCEPT: The iPhone has become an increasingly
popular device for image making, allowing for fast, fun
and easy processing of images. It keeps our eyes sharp
and minds visually and actively aware of the world around
us. In this workshop, we explore the basics of setting
up your device to streamline your workflow, overview
multiple apps to create engaging images and format your
phone for easy online distribution. We also explore the
potential of the iPhone for use in documentary projects,
book projects, mixed-media designs, digital negatives, art
installations and a variety of other unique possibilities.
CONCEPT: Revitalize your vision while exploring your
relationship to subject, camera and self. Learn to deepen
your visual awareness and clarify your approach, making
for images that are more personal and meaningful. We
focus on how photography becomes more powerful
by cultivating simplicity and developing the power of
intuition. We develop visual strength by getting in touch
with our inner selves, and by deepening the connection
with our chosen subject. We consider lighting,
composition and exposure issues with a constant focus
on integrating practical advice into personal practice.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use iPhone, iPad and
select camera editing apps.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Student inspiration is sparked
by a balance of conversation, meditation, sharing photos,
reviews of past work, writing exercises, readings, poetry,
photographic exercises and assignments.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use digital SLR
cameras and Adobe Lightroom.
ACTIVITIES: We participate in both assigned and selfdirected photography. The instructors guide group and
individual reviews.
