SKILL LEVEL: II
SKILL LEVEL: III - IV (Basic understanding of processing
required.)

CONCEPT: Learn to see and compose landscape images
in your own way. Students consider images that make
the ordinary into the extraordinary by focusing on natural
elements, from lichen and wildflowers to majestic
landscapes. Our focus is on seeking and honing one’s
personal vision of the landscape.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use digital SLR
cameras, lenses, tripods, remote cords and favorite
gadgets. Digital processing is done using Adobe
Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. Students print a
selection of their images from the class.
ACTIVITIES: We take advantage of Anderson Ranch’s
proximity to some of the Rocky Mountains’ most beautiful
areas, with field trips to reflective lakes, ghost towns,
cascading streams and wildflower meadows. Students
spend afternoons in the studio downloading, processing,
discussing and printing images.
FACULTY: Bill Ellzey began makin g a living with his
camera in 1972. The camera has taken him on assignment
or for teaching to Egypt, Alaska, India, China, Japan,
Mexico, Patagonia and Bhutan. His work is published
nationally and internationally in books, textbooks and
magazines, including National Geographic, and has been
exhibited in numerous galleries and collections.

CONCEPT: Learn to wield the power of computers in
this new frontier of art-making. In our digital age, the
computer is capable of extraordinary feats in art-making.
My first computer the Commodore 64 was an amazing
piece of technology, but what I could do with my hands
far outpaced the inferior graphics of the C64. Today with
the aid of massive arrays of programming, libraries,
frameworks and plain computing power, the computer
is capable of surpassing the human hand. How can
we use this new frontier in art-making to generate the
impossible?
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students practice processing
with the HYPE framework / hypeframework.org.
ACTIVITIES: We learn processing and HYPE to advance
basic generative pattern skills, develop working
prototypes of interactive designs and animation and
create a small project. Joshua presents methods to
speed up production and gives hands-on exercises and
extensive one-on-one help. With access to the Digital
fabrication studio, our final project is output to paper,
cardboard or wood laser compositions.
FACULTY: Joshua Davis is a New York-based artist,
designer and technologist producing both public and
private work for companies, collectors and institutions.
He gives lectures, teaches workshops, exhibits work in
gallery and museum institutions, and participates in the
international design scene.

SKILL LEVEL: II - III
CONCEPT: Prepare for a major paradigm shift as you
uncover the many possibilities of alternative digital
printing. Debunk the suspicion that digital printmaking
lacks the possibilities of its predecessors and expand
on the notions of what digital printmaking can be. In this
workshop, we examine new possibilities to create custom
printable substrates. This can involve coating a rag fine
art paper with Ink Aid or Golden Digital Grounds. We
create digital skins that can be attached to a variety of
surfaces. We print onto film and transfer the images to
stone, paper, metal and Plexiglas. The result of the week’s
work is an expanded idea of what the digital print can
be and an almost limitless range of possibilities of what
individual imagery can become.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students practice direct
printing and image transfers onto handmade paper, metal,
wood, plastics and fabric and use Adobe Photoshop tools
for creating digital collages.
ACTIVITIES: We cover a combination of digital tools for
collage and layering using Adobe Photoshop. We cover
methods for preparing and coating alternative substrates,
transfer mediums and integrating images with text and
mixed media.
FACULTY: Craig Stevens is a photographer, printmaker
and educator. He has taught, written and lectured
extensively on the subjects of art and education and is
in his 27th year as a Professor of Photography at the
Savannah College of Art & Design. He was the first
winner of ASMP’s Annual Susan Carr Educator of the Year
Award in 2013.
