Valentine’s Day
Angela Yang
On Valentine’s Day
He gave her a flower
The flower was a rose with petals a bright shade of red.
But as much as she wanted to thank him and laugh,
She could only remember and cry
For one year before, she had gone blind.
She remembered exactly how she became blind
On that fateful day.
Back then she was too shocked to cry,
So now she cried while holding his flower.
Back then she had let out a delirious laugh,
For she only saw black; no more blue, green, or red.
Her blood was the last thing she saw, a vivid red.
Right after that car crash rendered her blind.
But with him she found peace and could laugh
For afterwards he had stayed with her every painful day.
He nurtured her back to health like a flower
When she was helpless and when for help she would cry.
So now standing here he worried, hearing her cry.
He racked his brain for a way to help her see the pure red
Of the beautiful rose flower,
But since he could not find a cure to fix her being blind
He sang her an old song instead that was popular back in his father’s day.
A song of happiness, for he would do anything to let her laugh.
