A Sonnet About My Father
Cambrie Cherry
Shadows settle in the place you’ve left vacant
I barely blinked, and you had vanished
My childhood was robbed, my happiness taken
And now, it seems, from your life I am banished.
All of my life, I believed in a lie
That this man who he claimed he was
It wasn’t until his lack of goodbyes
That I realized he was not one to trust
A father is a man you depend on
A father has arms that protect you
A father is never gone for too long
A father is a man you come running to
Without warning, or reasons to discuss
My father decided he should leave us.
