11. BECAUSE female archetypes in mainstream media
are typically illogical, irrational, and emotionally fragile
- qualities historically considered to be antithetical to
analytical thought. Meanwhile, a good analytical thinker is typically thought to be someone who is rational,
stoic, unemotional, and detached - adjectives that are
stereotypically masculine.
(Besides, the supposed emotion/logic dichotomy is
philosophically suspect and should be challenged.)
12. BECAUSE many women feel the need to assimilate
to a white, male power structure to gain acceptance.
Women may feel pressured to adopt superficially “masculine” behavior, or they may feel bound to academic
convention in the white, male tradition.
While men might feel secure within the institution and
therefore comfortable breaking tradition, women may
feel they need to follow tradition to be taken seriously.
13. Because women can, and will, change the culture of
analytical academia for the better.
