8. Respect the student’s identity as an independent
learner:
1. Engage with the student’s personal interests, find
commonalities
2. Suggest independent reading, or better yet, lend it
out. Invite recommendations!
3. Understand the student’s intellectual history - what
books/experiences were formative in shaping their
intellectual identity? Why do they care about the field?
How do they identify with the field?
9. Hold office hours. Nothing makes a department more
inaccessible than professors who are literally inaccessible.

1. If you ask a question, let everyone think about it before calling
