# FIRST TIMER
The City Market, one of the oldest public markets in America, is a fourblock emporium of locally-made art and handcrafted items. Be sure to watch sweetgrass weavers as they turn bullrush and reeds into intricately coiled baskets. Stroll past Antebellum mansions to White Point Gardens, the nearly sixacre park at the tip of Charleston’s peninsula. This historic neighborhood is home to some of the nation’s most photographed private residences. Shrimp and grits— the famous local dish—gets a savory punch at Hank’s Seafood thanks to the addition of smoked andouille sausage. On the banks of the Ashley River, Drayton Hall sits untouched by fad or fashion, blithely removed from all modernity. Neither running water nor electricity course through the bones of the circa 1738 home, which is widely recognized as the premier example of Georgian architecture in America.
# DESIGN WALKER
Discover Gullah culture through the collection of colorful canvases at Gallery Chuma, which includes work by Jonathan Green, the preeminent painter of African American traditions found in the Sea Islands surrounding Charleston. To understand the unique blend of southern refinement and brio that is pulsating throughout Charleston, head to King Street. Antiques showrooms, home décor emporiums, pop up shops, and on-trend boutiques line both sides of the street. To meet some of the city’s leading merchant families, visit Ben Silver, Berlin’s, George C. Birlant & Co., Croghan’s Jewel Box, Dumas & Sons, and Bob Ellis. At the Gibbes Museum of Art, view Photography and the American Civil War, a landmark exhibition of more than 200 poignant images on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Gibbes houses one of the largest permanent collections of significant art created in the American South.
