F R O M T H E I N D U S T RY Offshore wind farms are set to supply energy in a network, which will be converted on an artificial island Climate protection factor 50 Denmark surprises everyone with a bold plan for a radical energy revolution The climate conference in Madrid wasn’t really as suc- cessful as it could have been, since most industrialized countries, with the exception of the EU, did not wish to take part in additional concrete steps towards a real energy revolution. It was quite different for Denmark, which made a clear statement at the U N confer- ence. And with a plan that is otherwise only known from Middle Eastern oil patents: the Nordic country wants to make a significant contribu- tion to climate remediation using an artificial island that is set to be built as a hub for surrounding offshore wind farms. While the wind turbines Bugatti: one of the mathemati- cal wizards The most expensive se- ries production Mac When your company is purchasing new Office PCs, you know that the financial controlling de- partment is paying extremely close attention to the people using Apple computers. The lifestyle image is also a huge part of the actual core business of the company based in Cupertino, California. Are these expensive machines really necessary? But for media artists, Apple machines are the tools of the trade. You wouldn’t have taken Rembrandt’s brush away and sent him to his canvas with a piece of chalk. Nevertheless, the record-breaking $52,000 that can be used to turn the new top-of-the-line Mac Pro into a high-end computing machine in the workplace is already a very optimistic announcement. apple.com 6 UPDATE 4/20 The Phoenix Contact innovation magazine generate renewable energy along the order of 10 GW, the island will convert power-to-x technologies into storable energy carriers such as hydro- gen, synthetic fuels, or gas, and then bring them onshore by tanker. To put this into context: this requires around 1,000 high-performance wind turbines. The energy produced would supply more than 10 million households, which is more people than the population of Denmark. The search for a location and approval should be finished as early as 2021, after which the actual start of construction is planned. en.energinet.dk When glasses make you smart New miniaturization blends data into normal optical aids They’re called “smart glasses”: these glasses use projector technology to display additional information in the field of vision. So far, however, they have been cumbersome and too bulky. Bosch Sensortec has now de- veloped a new generation of smart glasses. A bundled light scanner scans a holographic element, which is integrated into the glasses lens. This element directs the beam directly onto the retina, where a high-resolution image is produced – sharp, bright, and easily visible even in direct sunlight. The Light Drive System itself is so small that it can be integrated into almost any modern pair of glasses. A connected smartphone provides the data, such as navigation information. For operation, Bosch Sensortec also has suitable sensors in the package that can be used on the side frames of the glasses. The system will be presented for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show CES in Las Vegas in early January 2020. bosch-sensortec.com
